High School Biotech Program celebrates summer researchers

On August 12 visitors and researchers from around the SF Bay Area packed into the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) seminar room. They weren’t coming to see a renowned scientist or the director of a Federal research office. They came to hear the story of six unassuming and slightly shy high school researchers who spent their summer in a biofuels lab.

SynBERC site designer wins Rome prize

Scientiae Histoiria RomaeScientiae Histoiria RomaeAdrian Van Allen, a multimedia designer and exhibit developer at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the designer of Ars Synthetica and an upcoming, revamped SynBERC home page, has won the prestigious Rome Prize in design to study and work in Rome.

Marqusee named interim QB3-Berkeley Director

Susan MarquseeSusan MarquseeSynBERC PI Susan Marqusee has been appointed Interim Director of QB3 at UC Berkeley, effective April 15, assuming the post recently vacated by Graham Fleming, who was named Vice Chancellor for Research. Marqusee has helped to lead QB3-Berkeley as Associate Director since the Institute's formation in 2000.

Keasling named BIO Humanitarian of the Year

May 26, 2009 —The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) selected SynBERC Director Jay Keasling as the honoree for the first annual Biotech Humanitarian Award. Keasling was selected not only for his professional accomplishments to date, but also for the promise and potential that his research holds. Dr. Keasling was presented the Award during a keynote luncheon held at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta, GA. He was presented with a $10,000 award to help support his work.
