SLC Community Grant Program
Funding guidelines
The mission of the SynBERC SLC is to enrich the student and postdoc experience within SynBERC while providing a student voice to the NSF and faculty on the functioning of the Center. Through the SLC Service Grant Program, we aim to promote and fund student-initiated and student-run projects that further these goals.
What kind of projects are you looking for? How do you decide what to fund?
Proposed projects should enrich the student and postdoc experience within SynBERC. Examples include seminar series, synthetic biology lunch discussions, outreach and teaching programs, industry site visits, career development events, etc. The important aspects of a project are the impact on the student and postdoc community, a clear plan of execution, and the project's budget. Funding is decided by the SLC executive committee.
Who may apply?
Any student or postdoc in a SynBERC-affiliated lab may propose a project.
How much may I request?
All reasonable applications will be considered.
Are there specific items that cannot be funded?
While we may provide funding for social events, we cannot provide funding for alcohol. Conference attendance will generally not be funded unless the applicant can make a case for how such attendance will directly benefit the SynBERC student community at large. Conference attendance related to the student’s / postdoc’s research should be funded through the students’ lab or through SynBERC central. In general, scientific research cannot be funded.
How do I apply? What’s the deadline?
Application forms can be found below. Applications can be submitted from July 1, 2010 (beginning of fiscal year) through June 30, 2011 (end of year). Your chances of receiving funding are better the earlier in the fiscal year you apply, as the SLC has a limited budget. The SLC requires 30 days to review a proposal.
Grant requirements
If you are funded, you will be required to submit a short project report by June 30, 2011 outlining how the money was spent, what was accomplished, and how many students benefitted from the project. Any money that was granted but not used by June 30, 2011 will be returned to the SLC budget.
